Reflexology for Restless Legs
What is Restless Legs Syndrome?* Restless Legs Syndrome is a common condition of the nervous system that causes an overwhelming, irresistible urge to move the legs. Occasionally, it causes an unpleasant crawling or creeping sensation in the feet, calves and thighs, often the sensation is worsen in the evening or at night.
Who gets it?
About 15% of the population gets. Women are twice as likely to develop restless legs syndrome than men.
What causes restless legs syndrome?
In the majority of cases, there's no obvious cause of restless legs syndrome, it could run in the family (hereditary).
Some neurologists (specialists in treating conditions that affect the nervous system) believe the symptoms of restless legs syndrome may have something to do with how the body handles a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine is involved in controlling muscle movement and may be responsible for the involuntary leg movements associated with restless legs syndrome.
It is noted that in some cases, restless legs syndrome may be caused by an underlying health condition, it might worth checking with your doctor that it is not the case.
How can I help you with restless legs syndrome?
Take brisk walk at least 20 minutes every day - keep moving as much as you can in daytime
I recommend a weekly foot reflexology and facial reflexology as it will help decreasing the cortisol levels dopamine. Reflexology also help with a good night of sleep.
if restless legs syndrome is caused by an iron deficiency anaemia (confirmed by your doctor) you will be prescribed iron supplements which may alleviate symptoms.
I also suggest to try to have 3 times a week a warm bath adding a large mug of Epsom magnesium salt for at least 20 minutes, it should help reducing stress and calming the nervous system. You can also purchase magnesium spray.
Avoid any stimulant late in the evening ie. alcohol and caffeine. For further details on how Facial Reflexology and Foot Reflexology can help restless leg syndrome please contact Cécile at Ped à Terre Reflexology
